Thinking back on my early adult years I spent most of my time on some type of diet. I always felt unhappy at how I looked and felt. Working as a nurse I lacked time and motivation and put other things in life first. So a ‘quick fix’ always seemed to be my best option. I was never a confident person and lacked self-esteem so only ever attended the gym or classes with company.

In October 2016 I decided it was time for a change. I joined a slimming world group and signed up for an all-inclusive membership at Foyle Arena. I began my journey by attending Zumba classes. From the first class I was hooked. Zumba enables us to let go and feel free of life’s challenges.

I then met Rosie an instructor at the gym, her friendly and helpful approach encouraged me to try out a one to one personal training session. My goal then became strength related. Rosie pushed me harder each time and as my confidence grew so did my range of instructors each one as friendly, enthusiastic and with their own different variety of routines and exercises. They planned and prepared individual programmes to suit my level of fitness whilst encouraging me to step out of my comfort zone. The gym has a range of equipment available with a variety of cardio machines, free weights sections, a full strength and conditioning suite and a variety of classes available for use by its members and the public.

Throughout the past few years there has been a massive change to not only my weight, body shape and fitness levels, but my mental health, confidence and self-image have also been boosted. Seeing the results gave me the determination and motivation to keep going. It would be unrealistic to say I don’t have moments of insecurity, but when I do my family, friends, Josephine, the girls at Zumba and the gym instructors are always supportive by encouraging, reassuring and reminding me of how far I have come. I now feel proud that I have met and exceeded my expectations and have a great sense of accomplishment and self-worth. I can’t thank everyone enough for their part in my journey.

So if you want to make a change start today. There is something out there for everybody and everybody. The key is to find something you enjoy.
